Shopify

Orrerie Pay for Shopify is an app Orrerie makes for your shop. Your buyer chooses "Pay with crypto (Orrerie Pay)" at checkout, presses Pay now on the next page, and pays on Orrerie's hosted checkout. The Shopify order is marked paid only when Orrerie confirms the payment.

What it is

Shopify lets only its approved payment partners put a payment method inside its checkout, and Orrerie is not one. So the app works around Shopify's checkout, not inside it: the buyer places the order with a manual payment method, and pays one step later.

Table: What it is
An Orrerie payment method inside Shopify's checkoutDoes not exist.
An Orrerie app in the Shopify App StoreDoes not exist. Shopify's App Store does not list apps that take payments outside its own payments platform.
The Orrerie Pay app for your shopOrrerie makes one for each shop that asks. It is installed on your shop alone.
Marking the Shopify order paidThe app does it, after Orrerie confirms the payment and the amount matches.

The money goes to your own Orrerie Merchant wallets, as with every other way to take payments. The app holds a restricted Orrerie key and a Shopify access that can read and mark orders. Neither can move your money.

The buyer pays one step after Shopify's checkout

The buyer first places the order in Shopify, then presses Pay now on the Thank you page or in the order confirmation email. Some buyers will not finish, and Shopify holds the stock while the order waits. Other crypto gateways that are not Shopify payment partners work the same way.

Get the app and connect it

  1. Ask Orrerie for the appIn the Orrerie dashboard, under Help, write to Orrerie support with your shop's your-shop.myshopify.com name (in your Shopify admin under Settings, Domains). Orrerie makes the app for that one shop and sends you its install link.
  2. Install it in your Shopify adminOpen the link while signed in to your Shopify admin. Shopify asks you to let the app view and edit orders; choose Install. The app's own page opens and lists each step below, marking each Done when it is.
  3. Paste a restricted test keyIn the Orrerie dashboard, under Developers, API keys, create a restricted test key with exactly these scopes: checkout_sessions:write, orders:read, events:read and webhooks:write. Paste it into the app and save. The app adds its test webhook endpoint at Orrerie by itself and keeps the signing secret.
  4. Create the manual payment methodIn Shopify, under Settings, Payments, Manual payment methods, create a custom payment method named exactly "Pay with crypto (Orrerie Pay)". The app's page gives the name and the payment instructions to copy.
  5. Add the Pay now blockIn Shopify, under Settings, Checkout, Customize, add the Orrerie Pay now block to the Thank you page and to the Order status page, then save.
  6. Paste the email linkIn Shopify, under Settings, Notifications, Order confirmation, paste the short snippet the app's page shows where the payment details are, then save. It adds a Pay now with crypto link to the email of an order that chose the crypto method and is not paid yet.
  7. List your shop as a return addressIn the Orrerie dashboard, under Settings, Checkout, list your-shop.myshopify.com, and your own shop domain if you use one. Without it, the checkout shows no link back to your shop.
  8. Place a test orderWith the app in test mode, buy something in your shop with the crypto method, press Pay now, and press Pay in full in the checkout's "Test payment" panel. The Shopify order turns Paid.

Use a restricted key

The key in the app can start checkouts and read orders and events. It cannot send money, file a refund or change your team. The app shows only its last four characters, and keeps it sealed.

Going live

Paste a restricted live key with the same four scopes. A live key cannot add a webhook endpoint (only a person in the dashboard can, with a passkey), so the app's page shows the exact endpoint address and the five events it needs. Add that endpoint in the Orrerie dashboard under Developers, Webhooks, then paste its signing secret, which starts with whsec_, into the app. The app says live mode is connected only when the endpoint is switched on, takes every event and its secret matches.

Settings

Table: Settings
SettingWhat it does
ModeTest (simulated payments only) or Live (real payments into your own wallets).
Test keyAn sk_test_ restricted key.
Live keyAn sk_live_ restricted key.
Live webhook signing secretThe secret the dashboard shows once when you add the live endpoint. Test mode fills its own.
Payment windowMinutes a buyer has to pay once the payment starts, from 15 to 10080. The default is 60. A buyer who comes back later gets a new payment.
Cancel unpaid ordersOff by default. When on, an order whose payment window closed with nothing paid is cancelled and restocked after the hours you set, from 1 to 720 (the default is 48).

Each saved key and secret has a box to remove it; leaving a field empty keeps what was saved. Your shop's currency must be one Orrerie prices in (US dollars, euros or pounds); an order in another currency is not offered crypto, and the app lists it.

What the buyer sees

When the order is placed, the app starts an Orrerie checkout for the order's total in your shop's currency, with the Shopify order name as its reference. On the Thank you page and the Order status page the Pay now block shows the amount. Pay now opens Orrerie's checkout in a new tab, never inside Shopify's page. The same link is in the order confirmation email, so a buyer who closed the page can pay later.

No email address is asked for on the checkout. If the payment window closes before the buyer pays, the block says the time ran out, and pressing Pay now again starts a new payment for the same order.

What happens to the Shopify order

Each Orrerie event is only a prompt: the app reads both the Orrerie order and the Shopify order again before it changes anything, and handles an event once.

Table: What happens to the Shopify order
Orrerie eventShopify order
order.paidMarked paid through Shopify's Admin API, only when the amount and currency Orrerie received equal what the Shopify order still asks. It is tagged Orrerie Pay: paid.
order.underpaidStays Payment pending, tagged Orrerie Pay: underpaid. The buyer is offered a top-up on the checkout for 24 hours, or you accept the short payment in the dashboard.
order.expired, order.cancelledStays Payment pending. If you switched on Cancel unpaid orders, it is cancelled and restocked after your hours. A partly paid order is never cancelled.
order.unpaidThe network undid a payment after the order was marked paid. Shopify still shows it paid, so the app tags it Orrerie Pay: stop fulfilment. Do not ship until the dashboard shows it paid again.

An amount that differs, a second payment, a payment after you cancelled the order, an overpayment, a high-value payment that is not final yet, or Shopify refusing to mark the order paid: each is tagged Orrerie Pay: check before shipping and listed on the app's page under Orders that need you, with what happened. The app never decides those for you. When you cancel an order in Shopify, or it is paid another way, the app closes its Orrerie checkout so nobody pays for it.

Refunds

The app files no refunds: a refund in Shopify of a manual payment moves no money. Refund the buyer from the Orrerie dashboard, where an Owner or a Finance member approves it with a passkey. Money out has the whole sequence.

Removing the app

When you uninstall the app, it forgets your shop's Shopify access at once and removes its test endpoint at Orrerie. Shopify asks it to remove everything else about your shop 48 hours later, and it does. The app keeps no buyer's name, email or address. A live endpoint is yours: remove it in the dashboard under Developers, Webhooks.

For one product at a fixed price

If you sell a few things at fixed prices, a payment link per product needs no app at all: create a payment link with a fixed amount for each, and add it to the product's page as a button. Site builders has the recipe. The buyer then pays without going through Shopify's checkout, and you fulfil from the Orrerie order.
